Deborah Danuser

Deborah J. Danuser is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, she is pursuing certificates in the Gender, Sexuality, & Women’s Studies (GSWS) and Cultural Studies (CLST) graduate programs. Deborah’s research centers on cultures’ perception, representation, and communication of science and scientists, with a special focus on gender issues. She is currently working her dissertation, “Evoking and Embodying Science: Representing Science and Social Differences in Early 21st Century Television Commercials,” which examines television commercials to uncover what these ads convey about American ideas regarding science and scientists, especially regarding the representation of women, people of color, and other historically excluded populations.

Deborah holds a M.A. in Communication with a minor in Space Studies, as well as a B.A. in Communication and Honors, and a B.S. in Natural Sciences, all from the University of North Dakota. Prior to returning to graduate school to earn her Ph.D., she worked in public relations for nearly 15 years in the Washington, D.C. area.
